You’ve put a lot of hard work into your website; creating high quality content, building an audience and slowly shaping your website into the success it is today. You have a large and loyal readership, but when it comes time to monetize your website and make a return on all of the time and effort you’ve invested in your website, you’re not sure where to begin. Whether you’d like to have your website generate a revenue stream for you or merely pay for itself, selling MPUs on your website is a good way to go.

In case you’re not familiar with the term (and it’s certainly a forgivable knowledge gap, MPUs are a term used more by advertising sales professionals than by webmasters), MPU stands for Mid Page Unit. These are advertisements which sit in the middle of a webpage – they are similar to the leaderboard ads which may be seen at the top of many sites although obviously the positioning of the ads is different.

MPUs make an impression on the reader as they scroll down through your content and if yours is a site with compelling, engaging content you already know that your readers want to make their way down the page to see more of what you have written.

Selling MPUs on your website can garner a lot of interest on the part of advertisers in working with you. The rates for these ads are historically lower than for leaderboard ads; but as the owner of a popular site, it’s not as if you won’t have suitors for this spot as well. However, the prices which these MPU ad placements can fetch on a website with a large audience can be handsome indeed, and given that MPUs have started to move ahead of leaderboard ads in popularity, they may be more lucrative than you think.

As with any other sort of ad sales, making the best income from selling MPUs on your website depends on finding the right advertisers to work with. Your audience more than likely tends to fall into a specific demographic; and there are companies out there who are eager to reach this group and are willing to pay well for these prime pieces of your website’s real estate. You just need to pitch your website to advertisers as the product they’re looking for.

Positioning your website’s advertising opportunities as a high value product in the advertising marketplace can be a challenge, particularly if you’re more knowledgeable about creating content and keeping your readers interested in your site than about advertising sales. You can make an appreciable income by selling MPUs on your website, but it may be best to partner with ad sales professionals who know the market and know how to match your website’s advertising potential with advertisers trying to reach the same people who read your site. This lets you spend your time improving your website and will let you get the best price for MPU advertisements on your site.
